Know About Medication Therapy Management

Drug therapy is a critical component of the treatment of disease and maintaining health. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 76% of doctor visits involve medication. It is expected that 4.25 billion prescriptions were written in 2019 in the United States alone.

Medication therapy management (MTM) services are born out of the way of improving the Medicare Prescription Drugs and Modernization Act of 2003. This was the beginning of Medicare, the primary benefit of medicines to outpatient prescription for Medicare beneficiaries.

Included in the legislation was a requirement that certain Medicare recipients with chronic illnesses should receive counseling, in an effort to contain costs and help patients to better manage the complex aspects of treating their medical conditions.

According to an American College of Clinical Pharmacists leadership paper (CACP), MTM is defined to include a range of services for individual patients to optimize treatment outcomes and to detect and prevent expensive drug problems.

Essentially, MTM is a drug-oriented approach to optimize drug therapy, in which pharmacists are committed to providing a list of specific drugs and updates, improving security, and improving adhesion and access.

The activities performed in MTM services include checking for drug interactions or duplicate therapies, assessing the cheaper drug benefit and to answer questions from patients.

More newly, MTM help has begun to add medication refill synchronization programs to improve patient comfort and decrease the possibility of missed pick-ups, which can improve adhesion.
